Solihull Moors’ John O’Dwyer Guides Ireland to FIFA Super Masters World Title
Everyone at Solihull Moors Walking Football Club would like to congratulate our very own John O’Dwyer following his remarkable achievement in leading the Ireland Over 60s Veterans team to victory at the FIFA Super Masters tournament in Copenhagen.
John, a valued member of the Solihull Moors family, took on the role of manager and helped guide Ireland through an intense two-day competition featuring 13 nations from around the world. The Irish side produced a series of outstanding performances, eventually lifting the trophy and earning the title of FIFA Super Masters Champions.
Ireland’s journey to glory was nothing short of remarkable. Over the course of the tournament, they recorded an incredible 10 wins, 1 draw and just 1 defeat to finish top of the standings and progress to the final.
Among the standout victories were emphatic wins over Turkey (12-1) and Morocco (9-2), while Ireland also showed their resilience and determination with hard-fought victories against reigning champions Denmark (5-3), 2023 winners Northern Ireland (3-2) and old rivals England (2-1).
The final itself proved to be a fitting climax to a memorable tournament. Facing Northern Ireland once again, the match finished 1-1 before Ireland held their nerve to secure a dramatic 4-3 victory in the penalty shootout and claim the title.
What makes the achievement even more impressive was the adversity the squad faced during the competition. Ireland lost their goalkeeper to a fractured wrist during only the second game of the tournament. A volunteer outfield player bravely stepped into the role and performed magnificently throughout the remainder of the event.
In a story that could scarcely be written, the makeshift goalkeeper not only helped Ireland reach the final but also scored and saved the decisive penalties during the shootout victory, cementing his place in tournament folklore.
Reflecting on the success, John spoke with pride about the achievement and the spirit shown by the players throughout the competition.
It was a particularly special moment for Ireland, who can now proudly call themselves world champions. The squad will now turn their attention towards defending their title next year when the tournament moves to FIFA Headquarters in Zurich.
John also highlighted the dedication and commitment shown by everyone involved, with players funding their own travel and accommodation in order to represent their country. Their passion for the game and determination to compete on the international stage make the achievement all the more impressive.
At the age of 65, John joked that he was still learning about management, modestly comparing himself to some of football’s most famous managers. However, while he may not see himself as Roy Hodgson or Jack Charlton, he can now proudly say he has achieved something even the greats never managed — helping lead Ireland to a world title.
Everyone at Solihull Moors Walking Football Club is incredibly proud of John’s achievement. His success reflects the quality, dedication and passion that exists throughout our club and serves as an inspiration to players across all age groups.
Congratulations John and the Ireland Over 60s Veterans team on becoming FIFA Super Masters Champions.
