(Solihull Moors win 3-1 on penalties)

On a hot and humid afternoon, Solihull Moors Over 65s booked their place in Round Three of the National Cup after overcoming Birmingham Walking Football 3-1 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw.

With a tie against Old Corinthians awaiting the winners, both teams knew the importance of the occasion and it showed in a cagey opening period where chances were few and far between.

Birmingham proved difficult to break down, sitting compactly and frustrating the Moors’ attempts to play their usual passing game. Solihull enjoyed plenty of possession but found clear-cut opportunities hard to come by as both defences remained on top.

The breakthrough finally arrived late in the first half when Solihull Moors were awarded a penalty after a Birmingham player stepped into his own penalty area. Up stepped Graham Liddiard, who calmly dispatched the spot kick to give the Moors a deserved 1-0 lead.

The goal settled the nerves and the first half ended with Solihull holding a narrow advantage.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams battling hard in difficult conditions. Chances remained limited, and it looked as though the Moors were managing the game well.

However, Birmingham produced a moment of quality out of nowhere. A thunderous effort from distance dipped and swerved dramatically, crashing against the crossbar before rebounding off the unfortunate Martin Sharkey and into the net. Sharkey, who had been rock solid throughout the match, could do little about the bizarre equaliser.

With neither side able to find a winner during normal time, the tie moved to the drama of a penalty shootout.

Solihull Moors showed tremendous composure from the spot. Graham Liddiard, Ken Dyas and John McGinnell all converted superb penalties, putting the pressure firmly on Birmingham.

The defining moment came when goalkeeper Martin Sharkey produced a magnificent full-length fingertip save to deny Birmingham and swing the shootout firmly in the Moors’ favour.

As the celebrations began, Solihull Moors could reflect on a disciplined and professional performance. While not always at their fluent best, they showed resilience, composure and determination when it mattered most.

The victory sees Solihull Moors safely through to Round Three of the National Cup, where they will face Old Corinthians in what promises to be another fascinating contest.

A solid team performance, a dramatic penalty shootout and another step forward in the national competition. The cup journey continues.
