Kicking Cancer World Nations Cup – Report by Colin Yates

Solihull Moors Walking Football player Colin Yates recently travelled to Torrevieja, Spain, as part of the England Kicking Cancer Walking Football squad. The team took part in a series of exhibition fixtures held alongside the WFA World Nations Cup 2025, helping promote awareness and support for the Kicking Cancer initiative.

Across five matches, England Kicking Cancer Walking Football Team remained unbeaten, winning four and drawing one, with all twelve squad members rotated to help manage the intense Spanish heat. Their opening fixture saw a 6–2 victory over a mixed-age Singapore side, who were a pleasure to play; England even allowed them a seventh player and gifted a couple of late goals in the spirit of the occasion.

A competitive second match followed, ending in a 3–0 win over the England 80s team. England Kicking Cancer Team then beat the Spanish Ladies Over-40s 5–0 before producing arguably their best performance against the Cyprus Men’s Over-50s, winning 2–0. The Cypriot side were so impressed that they invited the squad to Cyprus next year. The final game finished 2–2 against an energetic Japan Men’s Over-50s team, despite England having been 2–0 up.

Sadly, the team didn’t get the chance to face the Netherlands, whose supporters created a fantastic atmosphere throughout the event.

It was four memorable days of football played in an impressive stadium, packed with walking footballers from around the world. England proudly flew the flag and represented the Kicking Cancer project with commitment, respect, and great spirit.
