WFA Law – Starting a Match Explained
Every walking football match begins in the same structured way to ensure fairness and consistency for both teams. The WFA Starting a Match Law explains how matches must begin and what is allowed from kick-off.
The Coin Toss
Before the match starts, the referee will conduct a coin toss. The team that wins the toss can choose:
To take the kick-off
Or which end of the pitch they wish to attack
This ensures both teams have a fair and equal start.
Starting the Game
The match only begins when the referee blows the whistle. Players must wait for the whistle before moving the ball.
Scoring from Kick-Off
A goal cannot be scored directly from kick-off in walking football.
Even if the ball deflects off another player or the goalkeeper and goes into the goal, the goal will not count. Instead:
The goal is disallowed
An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team
This rule keeps kick-offs controlled and prevents unfair goals.
Why This Law Is Important
These rules ensure:
Fair starts
Clear restarts
Consistent officiating
Equal opportunity for both teams
