Ireland 3–2 England – A Charity Match Full of Heart, Humour and Determination

In freezing conditions that dipped well below zero, Ireland secured a hard-fought and memorable 3–2 victory over England in a highly entertaining charity match. Despite the biting cold and several unexpected setbacks, the Irish side showed incredible spirit, determination and teamwork to edge out their rivals in a game filled with drama and good humour.

Ireland’s preparations took an early twist when goalkeeper Dave Corser unexpectedly switched sides, joining England shortly before kick-off. This forced a quick reshuffle and added an extra challenge for the Irish team. To make matters more difficult, star striker Brendan Mulcahy—usually a guaranteed goal threat—was unable to play due to a rib injury, leaving him cheering from the sidelines.

Stepping into the leadership role was Keith “Nora” Batty, the honorary Irishman who embraced the captaincy with passion and grit. Under his guidance, Ireland approached the game with confidence, clever play and a refusal to be unsettled by the evening’s disruptions.

The match itself was entertaining from start to finish, with moments of quality, banter between the two sides and a great sense of camaraderie throughout. Ireland’s goals were taken well, their defending was resolute, and their determination to win was clear from the first whistle to the last.

Thanks to the efforts of all players, supporters and organisers, the match also succeeded in raising £200 for the Babbs Mill lads charity, helping to support young people within the local community. The generosity shown on such a cold night highlights the strong sense of unity and goodwill shared among everyone involved.

A rematch is already being discussed, and the Irish camp remains confident. With three O’Dwyers, two Stokes and the irreplaceable John McGinnell ready to feature again, they fully intend to defend their bragging rights next time the two sides meet.
